The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional men’s Twenty20 cricket tournament. Currently, there is a total of ten teams that compete. These teams belong to three Indian states and seven Indian cities. The league was started in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It happens every year, usually between March and May, and has a special window in the ICC Future Tours Program.

The IPL is the most watched cricket league in the world, and in 2014, it had the sixth highest average attendance of all sports leagues. In 2010, the IPL was the first sports event ever to be shown live on YouTube. Duff & Phelps says that the IPL’s brand is worth 47,500 crores (US$5.9 billion) in 2019. The BCCI thinks that the 2015 IPL season added 1,150 crores ($140 million) to India’s GDP. The 2020 IPL season broke a major viewing record with an average of 31.57 million impressions and a 23 percent increase in total consumption over the 2019 season.

There have been 15 seasons of the IPL. The current IPL champions are the Gujarat Titans, who won the 2022 season. Now, let’s talk about which individuals/organizations have ownership of these expensive teams.

Chennai Super Kings

India Cements paid $91 million for the Chennai team. Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited is the current owner of the CSK team. CSK debuted in 2008 and participated in 13 seasons so far. They have won the IPL trophy four times in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. They were also runner-up in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2019. Now the CSK brand value is almost $1.15 billion according to Forbes.

Mumbai Indians

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited paid $111.9 million for the Mumbai team. MI debuted in 2008 and participated in 15 seasons so far. They have won the IPL trophy five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. They were also runner-up in 2010. Now the Mumbai Indians brand value is almost $1.3 billion according to Forbes.

Kolkata Knight Riders

The Kolkata team is owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta for $75.09 million. KKR debuted in 2008 and participated in 15 seasons so far. Red Chillies Entertainment and Mehta Group is the current owner of the KKR team. They have won the IPL trophy two times in 2012 and 2014. They were also runner-up in 2021. Now the Kolkata Knight Riders brand value is almost $1.1 billion according to Forbes.

Rajasthan Royals

The Jaipur team was bought by UK-based company Emerging Media for $67 million. RR debuted in 2008 and participated in 13 seasons so far. The current owners of this team are Amisha Hathiramani, Manoj Badale, Lachlan Murdoch, Ryan Tkalcevic, and Shane Warne. They have won the IPL trophy in 2008. They were also runner-up in 2022. Now the  Rajasthan Royals brand value is almost $1 billion according to Forbes.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

This team is bought by Deccan Chronicles (Deccan Chargers 2008-2012) for $67 million. SRH debuted in 2013 and participated in 10 seasons so far. Sun TV Network is the current owner of the SRH team. They have won the IPL trophy in 2016. They were also runner-up in 2018. Now the Sunrisers Hyderabad brand value is almost $970 million according to Forbes.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

The Bangalore team was bought by Vijay Mallya’s UB Group for $111.6 million. United Spirits Limited is the current owner of the team. RCB debuted in 2008 and participated in 15 seasons so far. They have not won a single IPL trophy yet. They were runner-up in 2009, 2011, and 2016. Now the Royal Challengers Bangalore brand value is almost $1.025 billion according to Forbes.

Punjab Kings

The Mohali team was bought by Bollywood diva Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, along with renowned industrialists Karan Paul and Mohit Burman for $76 million.  Punjab’s team debuted in 2008 and participated in 15 seasons so far. They have not won the IPL trophy yet. They were runner-up in 2014. Now the Punjab Kings brand value is almost $925 million according to Forbes.

Delhi Capitals

The Delhi team is owned by GMR Holdings for $84 million. Dehli’s team debuted in 2008 and participated in 15 seasons so far. GMR Group and JSW Group is the current owner of Dehli’s team. They have not won the IPL trophy yet. They were runner-up in 2020. Now the Delhi Capitals’ brand value is almost $1.035 billion according to Forbes.

Lucknow Super Giants

The team is owned by RPSG Group at a record price of $932 million. The Lucknow franchise formed in 2021 and played the only season of the IPL 2022. LSG lost the eliminator match vs RCB in the playoffs. LSG team brand value is almost $1.075 billion according to Forbes.

Gujarat Titans

The team is owned by CVC Capital at a price of over 692 million USD. The GT formed in 2021 and played the only season of the IPL 2022. Gujarat Titans won the IPL 2022. GT team’s brand value is almost $850 million according to Forbes.

Defunct IPL Teams

The IPL has a huge fan base both domestically and overseas. Due to the high viewership, several businesses have shown interest in purchasing a franchise in the league. Some teams managed to survive for a while, while others couldn’t, and their teams are no longer a part of the IPL. Here is the list of the teams who participated in the IPL in the past but were forced to stop for several reasons.
