Australia defeated New Zealand by two wickets in the 1st ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. Cameron Green was awarded the man of the match for his 89 runs not-out innings in 92 balls.
Australia won the Chappell-Hadlee series’ opening match excitingly because Cameron Green, who entered the game following a top-order collapse, maintained his coolness during a late wobble, and battled through painful cramps.
Early on Australia decided to bowl first after winning the toss.
Australia: Aaron Finch (capt), David Warner, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood
New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Devon Conway, Kane Willaimson (capt), Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult
Green and Alex Carey Show
After Trent Boult and Matt Henry ripped through Australia with the new ball to leave them at 44 for 5 in the 12th over, which also saw another failure from Aaron Finch, Green, and Alex Carey added 158 runs for the sixth wicket.
When Australia had 31 to win and everything seemed to be going their way, Carey pulled to mid-on, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc left, and Green was left struggling to go between the wickets.
There was a long break while the physio attended to him, and then Adam Zampa played a crucial role in relieving some of the pressure.
However, there was still one more touch of late drama when a light shower scudded around across the field. In the end, Lockie Ferguson’s pretty unimpressive wide decided the match.
Green finished with the best score of 89 runs in his ODI career.
